Anna and her Rainbow-Colored Yoga Mats Book Review

One thing that I have to say about this book is that I totally loved it and so did my kids. I read this book aloud in my homeschool this afternoon shortly after it arrived. The author gives her readers a chance to understand what a child may go through while encountering bullying or just being different in relation to their peer group. She gives the reader a chance to see a super strength that flows through the protagonist via the actions of yoga. This book helps children to understand the value of being different and allowing others in their environment to be different as they are, without a direct negative outlook on the child. This book will help any teacher or parent that wants to explain bullying to their children and how to react when confronted with it. This is an excellent read for all elementary school age children.

Must Love Otters / Author Eliza Gordon

99c-promo-Nook-May-18-2014
Guest Post by author Eliza Gordon
When you sit down to read Must Love Otters, I’ll bet you aren’t expecting to learn something along the
way. I’m not a writer who seeks to hide secret messages in the material. Readers are smarter than that. The savvy writer works to infuse meaning and subtlety in their words without smacking folks over the head with an unspoken agenda.

But a book isn’t a success unless the reader, who grants the writer the privilege of time, walks away with something. And with this book, I wanted that something to be more than a smiling face or a filled heart—I wanted to share a little love with the animal kingdom.

I know, I know—you’re reminding me that Hollie Porter is not a fan of Yorkies. Sorry, pups. No offense. You’re cute enough and lots of people love you. But what about the endangered sea otter? Enhydra lutris has three subspecies: the Southern sea otter (found in California, concentrated in the Monterey area), the Northern sea otter (Washington, Canada, and up into Alaska), and the Russian sea otter (off the coast of eastern Russia with reported sightings as far as Japan). We’re not talking huge numbers, though—the temperate central California coast is home to only about 3000 otters. While the Pacific Northwest boasts a healthier population of 65,000 to 78,000 critters, we’re talking about close to 3000 miles of coastline. When you do the math, that’s a lot of beach, and not a lot of otters.

Since Must Love Otters hit the digital shelves (and some wooden shelves for our diehard fans!) in October
2013, folks have shared their otter pictures, memes, and stories on our Facebook and Twitter feeds—which is awesome. I follow Friends of the Sea Otter, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Vancouver Aquarium, SeaOtters.org, and Michael Yang Photography (he specializes in photographing California’s otter population) and I love hearing news like what came through this morning—two orphaned and rescued pups, rehabilitated by the folks at Monterey Bay, have found their forever homes in Oregon. The Oregon Coast Aquarium welcomes Otter 649, now named Oswald, and the Oregon Zoo welcomes little Juno, just six months old and ready to meet her adoring fans.

If writing a silly love story about a girl who loves otters means more people take notice of the plight of the beloved sea otter, then mission accomplished. Awareness is the first step toward conservation—and I’m proud that Hollie Porter is doing her part.

Thank you for reading!

Note: Pictures of the otters were taken by Eliza Gordon and are of Elfin (male) and Katmai (female) who live at the Vancouver Aquarium

Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon is an adult romantic comedy that released in October 2013.

About the book:
Hollie Porter is the chairwoman of Generation Disillusioned: at twenty-five years old, she’s saddled with a job she hates, a boyfriend who’s all wrong for her, and a vexing inability to say no. She’s already near her breaking point, so when one caller too many kicks the bucket during Hollie’s 911 shift, she cashes in the Sweethearts’ Spa & Stay gift certificate from her dad and heads to Revelation Cove, British Columbia. One caveat: she’s going solo. Any sweethearts will have to be found on site.

Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she’s providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can’t stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn’t mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day … and maybe even herself in the process.

Reading Out Loud In The Homeschool

Reading in the homeschool is very important. But it is not necessarily the child that needs to do the reading. Sometimes children are not fluent readers at an early or late age, but they can still enjoy the words from a book. Parents can start reading out loud to them in their homeschools so that these children may benefit from characters in fictional stories daily. They may grow to love the stories and as they reach their maturity in reading alone they will also be able to read these books that you read out loud to them. I suggest starting the reading program out loud daily. Pick out books at your local library or you may even get them online in ebook fashion. You will also find that ebooks are easy to locate online with giveaways as well. Take advantage of all the opportunities at your finger tips and give to the next generation by reading out loud. Implement a program in your homeschool and tell your children about it ahead of time. Also you can acquire audiobooks that you can listen to while on errands in the car or even long trips out of town. Reading builds vocabulary no matter what kind of reading you are doing! So get to it folks and enjoy the stories!

Homeschool Reading Tips & Information

There are a variety of books that I like to use with my homeschool. I love ebooks too, and you can get free public domain reading materials on the Gutenberg Library www.gutenberg.org. Also, if you have little ones at home and elementary school kids you can go online to the website wegivebooks.org and get all sorts of reading materials for your youngsters. Make use of your local library and also garage, flea market, and yard sales. Often times at the garage/yard sales you can get books for a dime a piece! Now that is an awesome deal! I do tons of out loud reading for my six year old son, we just finished a Judy Blume classic and we are right back again reading another one of her books Fudge-A-Mania. My son loves to hear me read stories out loud to him and enjoys the time in homeschool listening to mommy! I always add a little accent to the characters and he really loves when I do that. It brings the characters to life for him and that to me is a huge plus. In the book Small Moments: Personal Narrative Writing the author explains this "Stories are so crucial to a child's language development that Gordon Wells, who performed a longitudinal study of twenty children and their language development throughout their school aged years, concluded that all the activities that were found to be characteristic of literate homes, the sharing of stories gave some children the most essential advantage. He concluded Constructing stories in the mind or storying, as it has been called is one of the most fundamental means of making meaning."
